Education

Our main objective under the education programme is to increase school retention rate among young people, especially girl child enrolment in schools. Education is a powerful tool for empowering individuals and lifting communities out of poverty.

According to a UNICEF report published in April 2012, school enrolment in Ghana, “children from the poorest households are still three times more likely to be out of school than wealthy children.” The report also mentioned that, “children in Northern
Region are four times more likely to be out of school than those in other regions.”
Currently on the average, only 10 percent of girls are able to complete Junior High School (JHS). What this means is that, if 10 girls were in primary class 1, you would be lucky to find 1 girl from this lot writing the Basic Education Certificate Examination
(BECE) in JHS 3.

We are currently working with four (4) communities in and around the Zugu community, near Tamale in the Northern Region, one of the poorest in Ghana, by providing them with some basic school materials such as exercise books, text books, school bags, writing materials and other school related items. Similar initiatives have also been rolled out in other places such as Fadama in the Greater Accra Region.

Our community educational projects have served as a source of motivation for the school children, who are more than eager to use them in school. We believe this and other related initiatives will keep the students in school for a longer period. Added to this, we plan to institute scholarship schemes for qualifying primary school students. In order to keep the program competitive and relevant continued participation in the program will be subject to good academic performance and good conduct.
